Rev. David Bertram Finley, the son Llewellynn “L.H.” and Joyce (Woods) Finley, was born on April 11, 1934 in Faribault, Minnesota. He received his education from Peetz, Colorado, graduating in 1952. He furthered his education at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, graduating in 1954.

On September 26, 1954 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Opal L. Scheel in Sterling, Colorado. During his college breaks, he followed his father’s footsteps and worked for the CB&Q Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railway. When Dave felt the calling to become a minister, he continued his undergraduate at Westmar College in LeMars, IA, graduating in 1958 and then went on to the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Illinois. In 1962 Dave was ordained as a minister in the Evangelical United Brethren Church, which in 1968 merged with the Methodist church and became the United Methodist Church. Dave faithfully served the Lord in fifteen parishes throughout four states before his retirement and performed countless marriages and baptisms within his family.

In 1998, the couple moved to Paullina, IA for their retirement years. Even after retirement he continued serving as interim and guest minister at parishes in and around the Paullina community. In Dave and Opal’s 66 years of marriage they resided in twenty-nine towns in five different states and lived a faithful and devoted life together.

David passed away with his wife by his side on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Society in LeMars, Iowa reaching the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 21 days.

He was most recently a member of the Archer United Methodist Church. Dave was known for his infectious smile and love of God and family. He was a devoted husband and father and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed the Colorado mountains, fishing, camping, golfing, horseshoes, card games, especially Rook and he loved his rocking chairs.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Opal; children and their spouses, David Jr. (Jessie) Finley of Fort Collins, Colorado, Terri Lynn (Terry) Tesch of Granville, Iowa, Douglas (Joanne) Finley of Larkspur, Colorado; eight grandchildren, [redacted]; twelve great grandchildren; brother, Richard (Kay) Finley; sister, LouEllen (Greg) Wood; sister-in-law, Holly Finley; and many other relatives and friends.

David was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Rachael Finley and three brothers, Jerry, Leland and Clair Finley.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Archer United Methodist Church. Burial will be held at [West] Prairie View Cemetery in Paullina.
