Debra Sue Creel Middleton, age 60, of Blakely, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 25, 2021, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama.

Debra was born November 16, 1960, in Early County to Bobby and Connie Baxley Creel. She graduated valedictorian of Southwest Georgia Academy in 1978. She attended Troy State University, where she received her degree in secondary education with a major in science.

Debra worked for the Miller County Board of Education for 25 years where she was head of the Science Department at MCHS. She mainly taught biology and chemistry, where she guided many students through the process of solving problems using the scientific method. She also served as sponsor of the yearbook, the Beta Club, and the junior class, to name a few. During her teaching career, she made many life-long friends and taught several generations of beloved students.

On June 11, 1983, Debra married her best friend and adoring husband, Andy Middleton. Debra and Andy did not have biological children; however, they’ve always loved and delighted in children, especially Debra’s younger sister, Bobbie Jo, who they have always considered a daughter in their hearts. They also enjoyed and fully spoiled their pets through the years, especially their dachshunds, Pepperoni, Sally, and Molly.

Being a daughter and granddaughter of farmers, Debra has always had a passion for agriculture and horticulture. She grew many gorgeous plants and flowers. She and Andy enjoyed gardening together and have grown lots of delicious vegetables that they harvested, prepared, and shared over the years. Their enjoyment for the outdoors led them to many years of recreational camping at state parks and privately-owned campgrounds throughout the Southeast.

Debra was a devout Christian and was a servant leader in the Presbyterian faith. Through the years, she has served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader, and Elder of Cuba Presbyterian Church.

She carried within her so much love that she poured out in a variety of ways to everyone she knew, especially through her joy of cooking, and the fellowship of sharing meals with those she loved. She was masterful at cooking exquisite spreads of southern cuisine, following in the footsteps of the grand traditions of the women and men in her family, church, and community. Her homemade cakes are well-known and have been enjoyed by many. She took great pleasure in sharing recipes with others and ensured her favorites were published in the Women of the Church Cuba Presbyterian cookbooks.

Debra is survived by her husband of 37 years, Andy Middleton, her mother-in-law, Mary Anne Middleton, her sister, Bobbie Jo Creel, and Neal Creel, all of Blakely, Georgia, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Connie and Bobby Creel, and her father-in-law Larry Middleton, all of Blakely, Georgia.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 30th, 2021 at the Bush Cemetery on Cuba Road at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the cemetery. Dr. Reverend Richard Hawks and Wade Spooner. Manry Jordan Hodges Funeral Home will oversee the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Cuba Presbyterian Church Building Fund, care of Kenneth Moore, 4046 Cuba Road, Blakely, Georgia 39823.
