Peter was the son of William and Margaret (McKelvie) Hamilton. He came to America about 1867 and settled in Soldier Township, Shawnee County, Kansas, about 3 miles north of Topeka. He was the brother of William N. Hamilton, who also settled in Shawnee County, Kansas.

Peter married 18 June 1873 to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Wendel, and had 6 children:

1. Maggie Pauline Hamilton 1874-1874
2. William Alexander Hamilton 1876-?
3. Clarence Edgar Hamilton 1877-1946
4. John Irwin Hamilton 1879-1882
5. Lena Viola Hamilton 1883-1975
6. Glenn Hamilton 1886-1911

Lizzie divorced Peter about 1897 on the grounds of cruelty and failure to support.

Lizzie remarried 1900 to Edgar F. Plato. About a month later, Edgar and Lizzie were attacked by a mob of 7 men while returning late from town. Edgar was battered and tarred. Lizzie was restrained, but otherwise unharmed.

The couple accused Lizzie's ex-husband Peter, her oldest son William and her brother John Wendel. The three were arrested, but the case was dismissed because each established an alibi.

By 1910, Peter returned to his native New Brunswick, Canada to live. In 1916, he came again to the U.S. and stayed until after 1920 census and finally returned again to New Brunswick where he died.
