He was a U.S. Army combat veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a forward observer in the 101st Airborne Division. He was a Silver Legacy Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as Quartermaster and Post Commander of the Raymond G. Davis Post 1200 in Alpharetta, GA. He was owner/principal of The Haynes Group, DBA Morgan & Associates/Test for Hire, a psychological employment testing company. Celebrating his Scottish heritage, he was in the Clan Hay Society American Branch. He held the position of Region 2 (Southeast) Representative to the Board and served as Convener for the Stone Mountain Highland Games in Atlanta for many years. He played bagpipes in the Atholl Highlanders Pipe & Drum Band - and played for weddings, funerals, and other events as The Pickled Piper. He was also a Knight Templar and a member of the National Ski Patrol. An Eagle Scout, he was worked as a professional for the Boy Scouts of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hanson Haynes and Mildred Harris Haynes. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Morse Haynes.
