“UNITED STATES ARMY VETERAN“

Donald L. Schmidt, 77, a resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, and formerly of Sinking Valley, Blair County, passed away at 8:15 A.M. on Monday, January 25, 2021, at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He had been in failing health for some time. Born June 18, 1943 in Todd, PA, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Herbert R. Schmidt and Helen (Reihart) Schmidt.

He is survived by three siblings, Dottie Schmidt of Huntingdon, Judy Johnson and her husband, Marlin, of McVeytown, and Timothy Schmidt of Manassas, VA. He is also survived by two nieces and two nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt was of the Protestant faith.

He attended Huntingdon High School and received his GED from the European Branch of the United States Armed Forces Institute in December 1960, as a member of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Schmidt enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 24, 1960 and served with the 3rd Battalion, 18th Field Artillery Regiment in Darmstadt, Germany during the Vietnam War; and completed the Light Vehicles Drivers Course on November 25, 1960 and the Gasoline Engine Driven Generator Operators Course on March 8, 1961. On May 11, 1964 he was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class, and was awarded the Army Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge with Rifle Bar. Subsequently, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 8, 1964 serving with the Army 6th Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery. From May 6, 1965 to May 22, 1965 he attended the U.S. Army Artillery and Missile School where he completed the Pershing Missile Battery Course and from August 22, 1966 to August 26, 1966 he completed the 8 Inch Projectile Forward Assembly Course at the United States Army School in Europe. He was honorably discharged on August 2, 1968, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with ’60 Device, and an Overseas Service Bar. On April 14, 1969 he re-enlisted in the U.S. Army serving with the 5th Battalion, 1st AIT Brigade; and successfully completed the Pershing 1a Supervisor’s course on February 10, 1970 and later an Explosives and Demolitions course in Germany on June 4, 1971. He was released from duty on April 27, 1973 and was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged on February 4, 1978. He was a faithful and honorable member of the United States Armed Forces and proudly served his country for nearly 18 years.

At the request of the family there will be no viewing or visitation. A graveside service will be held in the future and announced at a later date with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Huntingdon, and military honors accorded by the combined VFW and American Legion Honor and Color Guards.
