Marion Vernon Baker
February 28, 1925 - January 11, 2021

Charlotte, North Carolina - Marion Vernon Baker passed away January 11, 2021 peacefully at home. Born February 28, 1925 and raised in Rowland, NC, he was the second child of Wade Hampton and Eva Pleasants Baker. As the first grandson, he was quickly dubbed "Sonny" and the nickname stuck for his 95 years.

After one year at North Carolina State College in Raleigh, the draft sent him overseas to Germany and France during World War II. Upon his return, he completed his studies and spent a career in civil engineering primarily in highway construction.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Elinor Ardrey Baker, as well as his siblings Ann Styron, Harvey Baker, Jimmy Baker and Sistie Hardin. He is survived by siblings Neil Baker and Mary Bell Hall, children Eve Bennett (Rieley), Wade Baker and Mary Dickerson (Kevin), and three granddaughters.

The family would like to thank the members of his home care team whose compassion and care allowed Sonny to stay in his home, where he was most comfortable and content.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte or First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte.

A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
