John and his sister Martha were orphaned. In the 1880 Pettis County census, John was living with the Ethan Smith family. Martha was living with the William Harris family. John married Minta M. Marlin on Dec 21, 1891 in Sedalia, Mo. John died of pneumonia.

Tombstone was moved from Raines Cemetery to Miller's Chapel Cemetery in the late 1990's. It was placed next to his wife Minta's stone. The body and footstone remains at Raines Cemetery.
