Valoy Frandsen Smith

Valoy Frandsen Smith, 85, beloved spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021, at home surrounded by her family.
Valoy was born September 7, 1935, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Roy Frandsen and Clara Opal Kelsey Frandsen. She graduated from North Sanpete High School in May, 1953, and at the age of seventeen moved to Salt Lake City for employment. She worked both in sales and secretarial work, mainly with the Utah Home Fire Insurance Company. In June of 1958 she married Milton E. 'Mitt' Smith in the Salt Lake Temple and immediately became the mother of three small children. Valoy was blessed with talents for sewing, gardening, cooking, and demonstrating a love for animals. Her life was mostly dedicated to the love and care for her family.
Valoy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed assignments in Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society. At the young age of 33 she served alongside her husband presiding over the Central American Mission (1968-1971). As part of this calling she not only cared for over a hundred young Elders and Sisters, but helped train and teach district and branch auxiliary leaders throughout Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. In November of 2000 Valoy returned to Central America to serve for three years as the Matron of the Guatemala City Temple.
For the past several years Valoy suffered with various health challenges. Her life was extended twice through the excellent care and concern of special doctors and their helpers. Valoy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Elvin Frandsen and Leon Frandsen, and her husband Milton E. 'Mitt' Smith. She is survived by her sister Caren Frandsen Dixon, and eight children: Terri Ballstaedt (Rock), Randall Smith (Beverly), Ruth Steed (Craig), Lori Wagner (Wesley), Scot Smith, Rebecca Hockersmith (Kevin), Mark Smith, and Melissa Shimanek (Joseph), 38 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Joint funeral services for Valoy and Mitt will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 23, at the American Fork 14th Ward chapel, 1100 E 400 N, American Fork. Due to COVID restrictions, attendance will be limited to immediate family members. Please contact a family member for the access link to virtual proceedings of the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate contributions to Humanitarian Aid of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Valoy's family would like to express special thanks to Rosa Cervantes, as well as CNS Hospice for their tender, devoted care.
