Linda Kay (Sprenkle) Neely, 80, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at her residence surrounded by family.

Born on December 12,1940 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Phyllis (Williams) Sprenkle. Her parents lived there while her father was on a construction job building an air base for the US Army Air Corps in San Juan. While there, they experienced lights out on the air base due to a Nazi submarine offshore.

Upon her parents return from Puerto Rico, Linda grew up being the oldest of four siblings in Red Lion. Growing up across the street from her church, she was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Red Lion, PA. She graduated from Red Lion High School in the class of 1958. Upon graduating, she attended York College earning a degree in Medical Technology. Later the family moved to the Dallastown area.

Linda was a Medical Technologist for York Hospital for 43 years until her retirement September 17, 2004. She was head of Urinalysis and Parasitology for decades. She also taught York College Medical Technology students during her time there. Linda loved to give kids opportunities to learn. During “Take Your Child To Work Week", she invited her oldest great nephew and great nieces to participate a few times. Upon her retirement she said, “Every day was different and I enjoyed each one of them.”

Linda loved to travel. She visited Bermuda and Hawaii which was a favorite. Linda visited the beautiful island three times loving the orchid plants. Linda and her son camped a lot during his childhood and teen years eventually giving up the tents and camper for a cruise. Linda traveled a few times to Florida including Walt Disney World. A trip remembered well with her son was in July 1972 during Hurricane Agnes, nine months after Walt Disney World opened. Linda traveled to many places for work seminars. She also took a trip to Puerto Rico visiting her birthplace. For an early retirement, she traveled to the Atlantis Resort, Bahamas. She went to San Francisco; and her last big trip, she traveled to Sanibel Island where she enjoyed seeing all the shells. Collecting shells and special stones on her travels were her best souvenirs along with photos. Memories of Linda and loading up cars especially the Corvair with family and friends brought lots of laughs!

She enjoyed flower arranging and gardening. Reading books and doing crossword puzzles was another favorite. She volunteered at the York Hospital Fete and enjoyed visiting the Book Nook. Linda decorated beautiful cakes but cookie baking was her specialty. Chocolate chip cookies and sand tarts were the best by Linda!

Over the years, she had two grand pups, Cody and Tundra who crossed over the rainbow. They kept her busy when her son wasn’t at home. Linda loved her family and was always there for them. She would drop what she was doing to help whether running to Kmart for craft stuff for a next day project to babysitting. She loved spending time with her nieces, great nephews and nieces and “great-greats". Their friends even liked going to “aunt Linda’s”.
Everyone was welcome even on family vacations. Beach trips to Wildwood and later, Ocean City, Md were family annuals. Linda loved to spoil her family with dinners out and doing other activities at the beach. No one was left out.

Linda is survived by her son, Scott Neely of York; sister, Sharon Scurfield and her fiancé, Dan Reid of York; brother, Russell Sprenkle, Jr. of Loganville and his companion, Karen Henry; two nieces, Wendy Roehm Harris and her husband, Brian of York and Jessica Roschen and her husband, Hank of Littlestown; great nieces and nephews, K.R. Roehm, Danielle Why, Brianna Harris, Bry Harris, Thomas Roschen and Henry Roschen; and great-great niece and nephews, Kaylyanna Roehm, Aiden Why and Kaysen Why. She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Judith Anderson; and great niece, Kayla Roehm.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at St. John’s UCC, 161 N Main St., Red Lion. Due to COVID-19, there is no service following. A private service with the immediate family and Pastor David Tietje will be held in the late Spring to honor Linda. Pre-service arrangements were provided by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Pl., Red Lion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the department of your choice at York Hospital in Linda’s memory.
