Mr. Robert Andrew Armstrong of Mansfield, Arkansas, passed away Saturday evening January 16, 2021. He was 84 years old.
Robert was the son of the late Cecil Charles Armstrong and Mrs. Nina 'Marie' Cain Armstrong. He was born in Hackett, Arkansas. Robert was a former Navy medic and spent many years in retail management.
Robert was a Naval Corpsman. He was active duty between the Korean War and Vietnam., He spent time in Korea and Japan, As a medic he delivered a lot of babies and gave a lot of shots., He said that his first taco was in Japan.
After the navy, Robert married Maye Belle Dedmon and he was starting studies to become a surgeon. But, with marriage and wanting to start a family soon, he checked into a nursing program. At that time men were not allowed into the nursing program where he lived. So, he started a career in Retail Management. He was a manager and assistant manager for over 20 years with Howards and then Gibsons. They were big before Wal-Mart.. Retail was almost like the military moving him and his family almost every year in Arkansas and Texas. He almost worked for Wal-Mart as well, but He wasn't ready to move again, this time would have been to Shreveport, LA. His dad asked him to move back and help with his business Mansfield Plumbing Heating and Electric, His dad, Cecil Armstrong , was ready to retire. So Robert moved back to Arkansas from Texas to work with his Dad and his Dad's partner Earl Overton., He worked at Mansfield Plumbing. Heating and Electric for over 20 years. Because of Robert Armstrong's years of experience and knowledge the store expanded 3 times. Before, it was boxes of supplies left after plumbing and electrical jobs. They had way more than plumbing supplies. He used to say "If we don't have it, we can get it or they don't make it."
He and Maybell were involved with the Scottish Club of Fort Smith. For several years they helped put on the Scottish Games in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Robert was also a very devoted Christian, and was really active in his church First Baptist Church in Mansfield, Arkansas. He was always active in the Choir and was a Deacon for over 40 years. He was ordained at Lake Highland Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Part of his ministry with his wife Maye was helping out kids. For over 12 years kids stayed with them for days, weeks, months, sometimes years.
There were always extra kids staying the night and extra plates at the dinner table. They weren't official Foster parents, but did the work as their ministry. It's even how their Son- in-law got to know the family.
