Helen Frances Whitesell Smith, age 86 of Knoxville, TN passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Shannondale Health Care Center.
Helen was born on May 15, 1924 to Rufus Martin Whitesell and Laura Harris Whitesell in Staunton, Virginia. She attended public schools in Staunton and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing, in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1945 and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Nurses' Corps. Helen married George Pedro Smith, Jr. on July 6, 1945. They celebrated their 65th anniversary last year. She was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and a RN at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in surgery until her retirement in 1989. Helen was an early member of West Hills Garden Club and, following retirement, volunteered for several years at Ijams Nature Center. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially identifying plants, flowers and bird watching.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Martin Whitesell; sisters, Ethel Mae Whitesell Ambler and Martha Jane Whitesell Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Pete; daughters, Carol, Beverly and husband John Dunlap, and Leslie and husband Michael Smith; sister, Sue Whitesell Lam of Ronoake, VA; and brothers, Joseph Harris Whitesell and Richard Lee Whitesell of Staunton, VA.
A Memorial Service will be held at Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley Street, Knoxville, TN on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. followed by the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Rejoice! TV Ministries, Church Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1303, Knoxville, TN 37901.
