4th SC Infantry
Corporal∼William enlisted age 21 at Pickensville, South Carolina as a Corporal in Company "I" (Capt. W. W. Hollingsworth's Company), 4th South Carolina Infantry on 14 April 1861. When that Regiment's term of service ended after one year and the Regiment was disbanding, William and others from the 4th South Carolina volunteered to serve in Company "I" of the "Palmetto Sharpshooters," South Carolina Volunteers. He reenlisted for "two years or the War" on 29 March 1862, and was promoted 5th Sergeant of the Company.
He was wounded at the Battle of Glendale, near Richmond, on 30 June 1862 and admitted to the "South Carolina Hospital" in Manchester (then an independent city, now part of the City of Richmond). He died there of his wounds.
