Jessie Thomas Allen

J.T. was born December 28, 1934 in Ocoee, Florida to Avner and Della Allen. The family moved from North Florida to Desoto County when he was a young boy. He attended Desoto County High School and graduated in 1953. During his years in high school, he excelled in all sports, especially football. In January 1955 J.T. married his high school sweetheart and had one daughter (Lew Ann Strickland). J.T. worked for Magnolia Petroleum Company on a seismograph crew which they traveled from Florida to Texas for about six years. J.T. decided he needed a better education to support his young family and packed their belongings and went to Ruston, Louisiana to attend Louisiana Tech. Four years and three months later, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which is normally a five year program; J.T. was an over achiever. J.T and his family returned to Florida and settled in Polk County, and had another daughter (Shawn Rothrock). J.T worked for General Foods – Birdseye Frozen Foods and eventually became the Plant Manager. J.T. retired from the Citrus Industry in 1997 alongside his wife Betty and began to travel to all of the states in their van except for four states. He was proud to have retired as a Registered Professional Engineer. J.T. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty (Avant) Allen; two sisters Sylvia (Jerry) Currie of Lake Placid, and Linda Williams of Arcadia; two brothers Delma Allen of Lake Placid and Ronnie (Charlotte) Allen of Lily; two daughters Lew Ann (Jimmy) Strickland of Lake Buffum and Shawn (Gary) Rothrock of Bartow; three granddaughters Leslie (Justin) Heimer, Dr. LuJean Waters Stein (Ike) and Lyssa (Jamie) Stone; one grandson Jimmy Strickland Jr.; four great-grandsons, Jackson Galley, Dane Heimer, Zibe Stein, and JW Stone. He was so proud to love all his grandchildren. J.T. is a member of McLeod Memorial Presbyterian Church and is an Ordained Elder. J.T.'s services will be held at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home on January 22, 2021. The viewing will be from 11:30-12:30 with a memorial service following immediately after. The family will hold a very intimate graveside service for immediate family and his brothers and sisters. In lieu in flowers, contributions to the Relay for Life Team – "Cancer Can't Tucker Us Out" or to the McLeod Memorial Presbyterian Church "Christmas Project" are welcomed.
