He was born August 30, 1931 in Renton, PA son of the late Andrew “Pint” Johnstone and Mary Elizabeth Hick Caldwell.
He started working at the early age of 14 at Kinlock Ice Plant, in Kinlock, PA. At 18 years old he began his career as a mine worker at Renton Coal Mine, part of the Consol Coal Company. He then served as a Corporal in the US Army in Korea from 1951-1954, spending 18 months on the front lines earning his Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) and Bronze Star. After the war, he continued his mining career until his retirement in 1992. He then began working 7 days a week at his son Andrew’s landscaping business until 4 months ago. He was a member of the Tyrian Lodge #644 F & A.M. in New Kensington, PA, Legion of Honors, the Syrian Shrine in Cheswick, PA, and the Hillbilly Clan #53 where he was an integral part of the planning of the annual golf outing benefiting Shriners Hospital for Children in Erie, PA. He enjoyed hunting and playing with his beloved canine companion, Bailey.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ida Jean (Wiester) Caldwell in 2010 and beloved canine companion Bailey in 2020.
He is survived by his son, W. Andrew Caldwell and daughter-in-law Canise.
Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2021 at Hart Funeral Home, Inc. with a Masonic Service @ 7:30 pm. A private funeral service will be held with immediate family. Interment will follow at Poke Run Cemetery. www.hartfuneralhomeinc.com
