Helen was the oldest child of five children of Harvey (the superintendent of schools) and Mary Murphy of Barnesville, Ohio. She and her two sisters became school teachers and her two brothers became physicians. Education was valued by the Murphy family. Helen graduated from Mt. Union College in Alliance, Ohio where was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and where she met her future husband, Harry. She taught in public schools in Ohio and Colorado for 10 years. Helen supported the two of them while her husband was in medical school and while he was recovering from the pulmonary tuberculosis that he had contracted as a resident in orthopedic surgery in Cleveland.

The family settled in Longmont, Colorado where her husband was a physician for almost 40 years. Her three children (Nancy, James, and William) all became physicians. She was a gentle and lovely person who belonged to Chapter M, PEO of Longmont and was a member of the Longmont School Board. She never drove a car. Her ashes are scattered along with those of her husband and younger son William in a small fishing stream near Gunnison, Colorado. Her name is listed on the Nelson Monument in the Mt. View Cemetery in Longmont, Colorado.
