Wanda Cherie Gilbert, 72, of rural Bloomfield, died at 2:30 a.m. January 6, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines

She was born April 27, 1948 in Ottumwa, IA to Aubrey and Iva Hodge Yates. She married Jerry Gilbert on June 22, 1968.

Cherie earned an Elementary Education Degree from William Penn and taught for the Ottumwa Schools for 22 years. She was currently homeschooling two of her grandchildren which she greatly enjoyed. Her gifted artistic abilities helped her inspire her students. Cherie was a great historian and a Biblical scholar. She especially enjoyed conversations with friends and family discussing the Bible and sharing her faith.
She was a member of Zion Community Church of God and was baptized at church camp at eleven years old. She was an avid quilter, painter, and loved her flower gardens.

Surviving is a daughter, Jennifer Cherie (Jason) Hobbs of Urbandale, a son, Joseph Yates (Kara) Gilbert of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren, Taylor (Lauren), Madelyn Cherie, Noah, Owen, and Drew Hobbs, Kaloe, Joseph James, and Hayden Jerome Gilbert; two sisters, Cindy (Rod) Meinders and Kathy (John) Thomas both of Ottumwa, IA; three brothers, Greg, Allen (Teresa), and Neal (Lori) Yates of Ottumwa, IA. And special friends Robert and Paula Burress and Jack Mills of Bloomfield, IA and JoAnn Wegner of Ottumwa, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry and her parents.

A memorial service for Cherie will follow at a later date. Her body has been cremated. Memorials may be made to Zion Community Church of God or WYD Inc. for the women’s homeless shelter.
