James B. Dickinson, age 72 of White Cloud, formerly of Ionia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 15, 2021. James was born in Ionia, Michigan where he attended a one-room schoolhouse in his early life. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1966. Thereafter, James briefly worked at the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons, Michigan. In 1967, he began his career at the Ionia County Road Commission. On November 15, 1967 (the opening day of deer season), he was drafted by the United States Army. James proudly served his country on special missions to Vietnam and Korea, where he earned two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star for his meritorious service. Upon his honorable discharge as decorated Staff Sargent in 1969, he returned to Ionia where he recommenced employment with the Ionia County Road Commission. James loved his job, his co-workers and dedicated his entire career to the ICRC, ultimately celebrating his retirement in 2003.

James will be remembered as an outdoorsman who lived for deer hunting season. You could find him at the Higbee Farm and in the woods during October, November and most of December. He was a perfectionist, a master of organization and a superior handyman capable of fixing anything. Fishing, cutting wood with his cousins on Saturday mornings, plowing his driveway and riding his tractor brought him great joy. Family and friends will remember him as a master of the best one-line jokes and fondly recall his sense of humor. James was a member of Rolling Hills Golf League, the Fremont Moose Lodge and a former member of the Ionia Moose Lodge.

James married the love of his life, Karen (Duliban) Dickinson in June 2001. They met through a Christian dating publication by writing letters back and forth for many months before finally meeting. They moved from Ionia to a home in Fremont, before building their country dream home together and settling in White Cloud, with their dog Lucy. Together, they attended the Hesperia United Methodist Church. James was a lovable and sweet caregiver in Karen’s final years of life, as she battled Non-Hodgins Lymphoma. He never got over her passing.

James is survived by two children Amy Stump (Michael Stump) of Rockford, Michigan and Kevin Dickinson (Donald Dotzauer) of Key West, Florida; grandchildren Camden and Hudson Stump; step-children Scott (Connie) Mendoza and Dawn (Brian Yurewicz) Mendoza-Yurewicz; step grandchildren David, Evan and Celia; sister Margie (Howard) Pitch of Muir, brother Thomas Dickinson of Ionia, sister-in-law Janet Dickinson of Ionia and many nieces, nephews, cousins and three aunts. James was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Francis Dickinson, brother, John Dickinson, cousin, Steve Higbee and his beloved dog, Lucy.

Following James’ wishes, cremation has taken place and private family graveside services will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Karen. Friends may consider the Spectrum Health Foundation for the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Center in memory of James.

The family is grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Health Services Oncology Department for their wonderful care and support to James during his two-year battle with cancer.
