James R. Cleary of Royal Oak died January 15, 2021. He was 87 years old. James was born May 24, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to Annie (nee McKenzie) and Robert Cleary. He proudly served in the United States Army.

He was a Mason who was an avid gardener and member of a bowling league, who enjoyed going to the Royal Oak Farmers Market every Saturday. He volunteered at his church and drove a bus for Madison Heights Seniors. James also played the piano, singing in the church choir as well as the Troy Chorus.

A devoted husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, James was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

James is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Marilyn and children, Michael Cleary, Mark (Connie) Cleary, Suzanne (Kenneth) Nunley, and Sheryl McHugh. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Raymond, Robert, Russell, Christina (Shawn), Samantha (Christopher), Heather, Danielle (Chris), and Katherine and great-grandchildren, Ryan, Raileigh, Zoey, Hayden, Jaxon, Colton, Noah, Julianna, A.J., C.J., Jace, Tyler, Molly, and Brynlee and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. James is preceded in death by his sister, Janet Van Duesen and brother, Douglas Cleary.

A Funeral Service will be held at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2225 E. 14 Mile Road, Birmingham, Friday, January 22nd at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills.
