He was a retired machinist for Bethlehem Steel Company, Steelton Plant with 46 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas R. Shields; brothers, Benjamin Shields, Donald Shields, and James Shields.
Bob is survived by his wife, Esther Byrd Shields; one sister, Vera Freet of Elizabethtown; sons, Rodney Shields (Crystal) of Steelton, Pastor Michael Shields (life partner, Steve) of West Virginia, Jeffery Byrd (Terri) of North Carolina; daughter, Barbara Byrd Edwards (Donald) of North Carolina; 8 grandchildren, Ryan Shields, Bethany Shields, Chelsea Shields, Brittany Shields, Michael Byrd, Rachael Byrd, Allyson (Edwards) Hyde, DeeAnna Edwards; 6 great-grandchildren, Gavin Sheesley, Brianna Sheesley, Caitlin Sieg, Hailey Shields, Avery Saltzburg, Raelyn Hyde; special thanks to his niece, Kathy (Swartz) Bryan.
Bob enjoyed Polka Dancing, Bowling, listening to the Gaither's, and working with wood and having created many beautiful keepsakes out of wood.
Memorial services and inurnment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing or visitation.
