Bonham, Texas -- Beverly Ann Atkins Akard was born July 12, 1941 in Gainesville, Texas. She passed away January 17, 2021 in Lewisville, Texas at the age of 79.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Lezli Collins and Joe, Alicia Rinaldi and Paul, Kristi Tucker and Mark; Grandchildren: Justin Collins and wife Hannah, Andrew Collins, Zane Collins, Sanora Rinaldi, Isaac Rinaldi, Mason Shay and husband Michael, Molly Tucker, and Elliott Tucker; Great grandchildren: Canaan Collins, Irelyn Collins, Truman Shay, Tucker Shay and Beckett Tucker; Sisters, Shirley McWhorter of Bonham, Jan Holman and husband Denny of Ivanhoe along with her nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Akard, her parents, Truman and Velma Atkins, three infant grandsons, Jake and Luke Rinaldi and Teddy Shay.

Beverly grew up in Bonham, Texas and was a 1959 graduate of Bonham High School. She attended North Texas State University and graduated with a degree in education in 1963. She enjoyed 35 years of teaching elementary at Lake Dallas ISD where she made many lifelong friends. She was a very devoted member of Lake Shore Baptist Church where she developed a heart for missions. She traveled to Brazil eight times on mission trips, once to Rwanda, and also spent nine months teaching the Hallock family children on Govenor’s Island in Rio de Janeiro.

After retiring from teaching in 2003, Beverly began volunteering as an advocate at Woman to Woman Crisis Pregnancy Center in Denton. She met many wonderful people with whom she became close friends. Although retired, she was never idle. She was very involved with organizing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This organization became a major focus for her and her church eventually became a dropoff location for the Denton area.

The family of Beverly would like to thank the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists in the Covid ICU unit at Medical City Lewisville for their uncommon care and kindness in treating Beverly and allowing her daughters to communicate with their mother. Your sensitivity to their feelings will never be forgotten.
