Martin was born on October 3, 1936, in DuBois, to the late Minnie Bruce and George Nelson. He grew up in DuBois alongside his two sisters, Dorothy Hoover and Mimi Chittester, and three brothers, Joseph Nelson, George Nelson and Edwin Nelson. George and Ed preceded him in death.
Martin was part of Sandy High School's class of 1955 where he met his high school sweetheart, Alice (Crytser) Nelson. They were married in 1958 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and had four children, Marie (Dale) Kessler of DuBois, PA, MaryAlyce (Mark) McFall of Boalsburg, PA, Martin Nelson Jr. of Yuma, AZ, and an infant daughter who preceded him in death.
In 1958, Martin joined the U.S. Army and served during the Berlin Crisis. He served for 33 years and retired as supervisor in the Army Maintenance Support Center for the Tri-County area. He and Alice operated Keystone Bus Company in DuBois for 15 years, where Martin drove bus and was the in-house mechanic.
One of his biggest joys in life was taking his grandchildren riding on his motorcycle. He was a lifetime member of the Harley Owners Group (HOG), the Tri-County HOG Chapter, and the Keystone Side Car Club. Martin enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly during hunting and fishing seasons, as well as traveling with his family and friends. He loved spending time at their beach house in Emerald Isle, NC, fishing in the surf for whatever would bite. When he wasn't at the beach or on his bike, you just may have heard him on the sidelines – he was often one of the over-enthusiastic fans at his grandchildren's sports events. He belonged to the American Legion #17 as well as the Reserve Officers Association.
Martin is survived by his wife, three children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren: Andrea (Arnold Padillo) Kessler and their son, Elliot; Adam (Nikole) Kessler and their son, Declan; Alexis (Seth) Danver; Anya Kessler and her boyfriend, Braden Haag; Marcus McFall and his girlfriend, Emily Stahl; Ian McFall; SSgt Benjamin (A1C Mizuki) Nelson; Thomas Nelson; and Meggie Nelson.
The family would like to thank his private duty caregivers as well as the hospice and home health nurses who helped the family care for Martin and honored his wishes to remain at home. The family is requesting that no flowers be sent. If you would like to donate, please consider donating to Hope for the Warriors, 8003 Forbes Place, Suite 201, Springfield, VA 22151 or online at www.hopeforthewarriors.org in honor of CWO 4 Martin Nelson.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Adamson Funeral Chapel and Crematorium in DuBois. Due to COVID-19, there will be a private service for immediate family only with LaMarr Adamson CLP officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the DuBois Area Honor Guard.
