Earl Fredrick “Fred” Webb, 81, and Gloria Almeda Virginia Morrison Webb, 80, went to be with the Lord on January 12th and January 14, 2021 respectively at Infirmary Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. They both succumbed to complications from COVID-19. They were residing in Saraland, Alabama where Fred retired, but throughout their lives they always maintained a residence in their hometown of South Point, Ohio.
“What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder;” and so it was for Fred and his high school sweetheart, Gloria. While attending South Point High School they began a marriage that would span 63+ years.
Fred was the eldest son of the late Earl James Webb and Helen Pennington. He was born July 14, 1939 in Ironton, Ohio. Gloria was born April 8, 1940, the 13th child and the youngest daughter of the late Ziegler Behrend and Hattie Spurlock Morrison
Fred and Gloria were preceded in death by their infant son, Earl Jeffrey; Fred’s younger brothers: Larry (Kathy) Webb and Michael (Jennifer) Webb; Gloria’s brothers: Ziegler Jr, Charles (Edna), Robert (Garnet), Walter (Dorothy), Jacob (Marie), John (Rita), Bill (Donna); and sisters: Louise, Lucille Hankins, Ernestine and Beatrice Rodee.
They are survived by Gloria’s sisters: Sylvia Benson, Sadie Barnes, and Sally Shaw; their children Ronald (Lynette) Webb and Nancy (Letchford), and grandchildren: Nathan (Brooke) Webb, Harrison Letchford, and Sarah Letchford, and many other beloved extended family and friends.
Fred held many occupations from welder to carpet layer, wrought iron fabricator to construction manager. He also enjoyed a 29-year military career in the U.S. Army which included service in Vietnam, Germany, the Pentagon, and the National Guard. He retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with many awards such as the Bronze Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal. During his retirement, he and his wife remained actively engaged with two of his military units – C Company 31st Engineer Battalion Association and the 547th Engineer Battalion Association. Duty and honor were not limited to his career life. He was absolutely devoted to his family and would selflessly and generously help those in need. He would no doubt object to these accolades, but these are our words and our feelings about the man, the father, the brother, the friend who we dearly love.
Gloria enjoyed life and loved people. She was always involved in clubs and organizations such as the South Point Homemakers Club, various bowling leagues, the Red Hat Society, and the Officer’s Wives Club. She was a woman of strong convictions and moral integrity -- A devoted wife, nurturing mother, caring grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. If wealth was measured in relationships, our mother was the richest person we knew.
Gloria and Fred both enjoyed serving with the Keep Saraland Beautiful Organization, and attended Shelton Beach Baptist Church in Saraland, Alabama.
Funeral service will be 2 PM Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, OH. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point, OH. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Masks and social distancing will be required to attend. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.slackandwallace.com.
