Maria emigrated to New Zealand as a widow with her four children in 1873. Her brother Edward Dewhurst, his wife Mary and two daughters were also passengers on the same voyage. Their ship, the Surat, was wrecked in the Catlins on 1 January 1874 (no lives lost). Maria married Benjamin Hindle (also a passenger on the Surat) at Knox Church Dunedin on 10 January 1874. Benjamin is shown as a 'Slater' on the passenger list. After the birth of their first child they changed their name back to Slater by Deed Poll to keep the two families with the same surname. The ages of Maria (35) and Benjamin (33) are incorrect on the passenger list - they are recorded as being younger than they actually were at the time.
