News of the death of Walter Turner, a well known citizen of this city, from an explosion of giant powder on the new road in the Crater Lake Park, was received at noon today.

Turner is believed to have been killed while at work on the new road under construction around the rim of the lake, although there are no details given in the message.

Undertaker Earl Whitlock and E.W. Gowan, acting as coroner in the basence of Dr. A.A. Spule, left immediately for the park.

The deceased has lived in Klamath Falls for about seven years, coming here from Jamestown, near Boulder, Colorado. He is a brother of Mrs. Harry Stiltz and an uncle of Miss Flora Brownell of this city. His age is about 45 years. At the outbreak of the war, Turner tried hard to get into the Army but was rejected on account of his age. He is unmarried.

August 30, 1917 - EVENING HERALD

Failure of a dynamite charge to explode when expected is learned to have been the cause of the death of Walter Turner, the man killed at the Crater Lake Park yesterday. Two charges of giant powder had been set and one blast went off as expected. The other did not go off and after waiting some time; believing that the fuse had gone out, Turner went forward and was leaning over to relight it when the charge exploded. He was killed instantly and passed away without suffering. The accident occurred at 11 o'clock and the remains of the unfortunate man were brought in by Undertaker Earl Whitlack and E. W. Gowan at 4:30 this morning.
Contrary to the report published yesterday, Mr. Turner was married and has a wife and 17 year old daughter living in Colorado. The daughter, Winfred, was expected here this next month to visit and spend the winter here with her father and aunt, Mrs. Harry Stiltz. Turner was born in David City, Nebraska; June 21, 1876, being the youngest of a family of seven. He was 40 years old at the time of his death. He had charge of Camp No. 5 in Crater Lake Part, engaged in the constructin of the new road around the rim of the lake. He was a member in good standing of the WOODMAN of the WORLD, carrying a $2,000 Insurance Policy in favor of his daughter. Immediate relatives here: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stiltz and Miss Flora B. Brownell, are grief stricken over the tragedy and a large number of personal friends in the city will mourn his departure.
Funeral services will be held under the auspices of the W.O.W. Lodge, probably at 2 o'clock tomorrow.
