JOSEPH'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran
Joseph Sidney Stevens, Jr. died at home after a comfortable day on Saturday, January 16, at 85 years of age. Joe’s only enemy in life was cancer which he fought for over 25 years. Born on January 13, 1936 in Franklin, the son of Joseph Sidney Stevens, Sr and Aline Bartell Stevens. Survived by his sister, Agnes Aucoin and preceded in death by his brother W. Bartell “Crip” Stevens and brother-in-law, Eugene Aucoin.

Joe is survived by his cherished wife of 63 years, June Tillman Stevens; four children, Stacy Hall (Tony), Joseph “Jay” Stevens, III, Scott Stevens (Linda), and Stephanie Burke (Peter); six grandchildren, Luci Theriot, Steven J Wilkinson (Jennifer), Meghan Akenson (Andy), Charles Hall (Dana), Caroline Miller (Dylan), and Cameron Burke (Tessa). Joe loved and was dearly loved as Poppa Joe by great-grandchildren, Grant Knox, Jack and Alice Akenson, Poppy Miller and a new Miller baby expected in March. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Lana Stevens.

Joe graduated with many lifelong friends from Hanson Memorial in 1954 in his Catholic faith. He immediately began working for Falcon Seaboard Drilling Company and then 28 years for Shell Oil Company. He later consulted with Mark Producing and Pogo Producing making 50 years of service in the oil industry.

Joe and June married in April 1957. They bough their first home at 101 Monroe Street in Donaldsonville, built a home at 131 Second Street in Franklin and then located to the country of Oxford Oaks in 1983 and enjoyed retirement along the Bayou Teche.

He had a lifelong love of flying and was a licensed pilot. His longest flight wad in 1989, from Artic Circle to “Oxford International” his home in Franklin with his friend Ray Robicheaux. He will be missed by his longtime friends Johnny Martin, Jim Terry, and many others. Joe and June enjoyed traveling throughout USA in their RV, especially to the beautiful Grand Canyon. Joe rode mules in the Grand Canyon four times, mostly recently on his 80Th birthday with his children and grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in the Franklin Cemetery, with Deacon Gerald Bourg officiating. There will be a brief time of visitation in the cemetery beginning at 1:30 p.m. and all attending are asked to adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols.

Pallbearers will be Joseph “Jay” Stevens, III, Scott Stevens, Tony Hall, Peter Burke, Charles Hall, Cameron Burke, Grant Knox, Steven Wilkinson, Andy Akenson, and Dylan Miller.

Joe, beloved husband, father, grand and grand-father, aviator, oilman, and storyteller will be greatly missed.
