On Saturday, January 16, 2021, the South Bossier community and Panther Nation lost a beloved father, coach, and dear friend. Kevin Dewayne Black, age 58, passed away after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, La. on Tuesday, January 19, 2020 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. A celebration of his life will be held at Bellaire Baptist Church in Bossier City, La., Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at 11:00 AM followed by interment at Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery in Haughton, La. Service will be officiated by Jeff Harper.

Kevin was born August 26, 1962 in Shreveport, La. He attended school in South Bossier and graduated from Parkway High School in 1980. He earned his B.S. in Secondary Education from Louisiana Tech and his M.A. in Administration from Centenary College. He began his teaching career in 1991 at Bossier High School where he taught geometry and coached football and girls’ soccer. In 2007, he joined the staff at his alma mater and continued teaching math and coaching football and track at Parkway High School.

Kevin had passion for several things in his life – first and foremost his children, followed by hunting and fishing with family and friends, and coaching. To him, coaching was so much more than just learning the rules of the game. He used coaching to mentor and inspire his athletes. Coach Black was committed to taking his students from where they were in life and developing each into young, responsible, and caring men and women. He wasn’t just teaching them the skills to succeed at a game, but skills to be successful in life. One former player said it best, “I wouldn’t be half the man I am today without him coaching me on and off the field all of my life.”

His mother, Lois Maxine Black (“Mama Black”), welcomed him with open arms into the gates of Heaven. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his father and loyal sidekick, Donald Black of Bossier City; his children, Ryan and Katie Black and their mother Stacey Black all of Bossier City; his sister Vicki Ball and her husband Joe, nieces Erin and Allison Ball all of Centerville, Ohio.

Pallbearers will be his closest of friends: Jim Gatlin, BillyDon McHalffey, Hunter Pipes, TJ Josting, Eddy Pentecost, and Kent Falting. Honorary pallbearers will be Bossier and Parkway High School’s football offensive lines that Kevin coached throughout his 28 years.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of the CCU at Willis Knighton Pierremont and the 5th floor staff at Ochsner Health Center for their wonderful and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Kevin’s memory be made to St. Jude Hospital at www.stjude.org
