B-17 Crewman, Tail Gunner
Mel Culver was a life-long resident of San Diego. He is remembered for his love and devotion to his family. Mel had served his country in WWII as a B-17 crew member (Tail Gunner) where he flew over 35 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In May of 2019, he was honored by the Collings Foundation during their Wings Of Freedom tour stop in San Diego, with being able to fly for a final time in their restored B-17 "909". After the war Mel worked in the Sheet-Metal business where in 1970 he opened his own business "Culver Sheet Metal". He retired in 1998 after 40 years. He loved Woodworking, Camping, Hunting, Fishing, Bowling and Traveling. He is survived by Jeanne his current wife of 10 years; his step-sons; Patrick, Robert, John, Randolph, and Ronald, many grandchildren, nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by both his parents and Brother Wayne Culver. A private memorial service with military honors will be held at the Miramar National Cemetery Columbarium on Thursday February 18, 2021 at 2:30 PM.
