Richard “Dick” Wayne Carroll, 90, of Galesburg, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on January 18, 2021 at 9:46 a.m.
Richard was born May 25, 1930 in the old St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, the son of Glen T. and Fern C. (Smith) Carroll.
He married Julie B. Anderson on October 16, 1966 at the First Lutheran Church, Galesburg. She survives.
Richard is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Lynn (E. Scott) Stewart of Granbury, TX; and a son, Michael Alan (Amber Dillbeck) Carroll of Galesburg. He is also survived by four grandchildren who were his pride and joy. They are Tyler Richard Stewart of Cedarburg, WI, Emily Elizabeth Stewart of Granbury, TX, Caleb Christian Carroll of Cape Coral, FL, and Ayden Louis Almaguer of Galesburg.
Richard is survived by three sisters, Mary Simmons of Beaumont, TX, Annette (Al) Caldwell of Beaumont, TX, and Marlyn Winder of Washington, IL. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and David Carroll; and two sisters, Joy Ferguson and Martha Ann Carroll.He graduated high school from Pasadena City College, Pasadena, CA in 1949. He received an Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg. He also completed many courses in Law Enforcement at Northwestern University.
Richard joined the Galesburg Police Department in 1955 and retired from there in 1980 with the rank of Lieutenant. After retiring he was employed at East Moline Correctional Center for six years and then served as the Chief of Police for New Windsor, IL for eight years. His last job was working for Option Care delivering medicine.
He served in the United States Navy from July 1950 through his honorable discharge in May 1954.
Richard was a lifetime member of the Illinois Police Association, Blackhawk Division, having served as their treasurer for 38 years. He was also a member of the Galesburg Police Benevolent and Protective Association Unit #19. He was a longtime member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
He was an avid golfer and loved playing at Bunker Links Golf Course six days a week for years. He was happiest when spending time with his family.
Cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of life visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to Hospice Compassus.
