Joyce A. (Simmer) Barrett, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, January 16, 2021.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2021, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will take follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
All guests are respectfully requested to wear a mask and practice social distancing. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Joyce under “photos and videos or media,” starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 22.

Joyce was born on September 20, 1930, in Atkins, Iowa, the daughter of Charles “Chuck” and Ruth (Nerison) Simmer. In 1949, she graduated from Atkins High School.

Joyce worked as a calibrator at Square D for over 30 years before her retirement in 1990.

She was a member of 4-H in high school, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Joyce enjoyed feeding birds, stray cats, and the neighborhood kids.

Survivors include her children, Dennis (Laurie) Barrett of Cedar Rapids, David (Maria) Barrett of Lima, Peru, Judy (Larry) Myers of Harrisburg, North Carolina, and Kathy (Brian) Holmes of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Elizabeth Barrett (James Nagel) of Cedar Rapids, Matthew Barrett of North Liberty, Iowa, Andrew Barrett of Cedar Rapids, Keith Lojas, Gean Lojas (Natalie Castillo), and Jose Lojas, all of Lima, Peru, Allison Myers of High Point, North Carolina, Eric Owens, and Daryl Owens (Cierra Wood), all of Cedar Rapids, and Tori (Logan) Hale of Aplington, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Danny, Kaelie and Bina, all of Olathe, Kansas, Yelitza and Lucianna, both of Lima, Peru, and Quinn, Daelyn and Adeyln, all of Iowa; sister, Jeanne Rathje of Marion, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Moe Bright of Atkins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Ruth Simmer; sisters, Pauline McKechnie and Joanne Bright; and brothers-in-law, Dick McKechnie and Henry “Hank” Rathje.
