Her mother was Louisa J. Chambers, who was born in St. Charles County, Missouri. Louisa was from an early Missouri pioneer family. Her father, Robert, was a Methodist minister and a teacher. Her parents founded a church and school and established the small town of Truxton, MO, where she was born and grew up .

She married attorney Franklin T. Williams of Warrenton, MO, in 1866. He had formerly been a principal at Truxton High School in the small town where Mattie grew up. Her husband passed on in 1886. She was survived by two children: O. D. Williams of Garber, OK, and Mrs. Charles Dixon of Woodward, OK. She was a longtime member of the South Methodist Church in Woodward where she was affectionately known as "Aunt Mattie."

The census reported her living with her husband and infant son Orrick in Prairie, Lincoln, MO, in 1870. In 1880 they were living in Marshall, Harrison, TX, with their children, Orrick D., 9; Bessie, 8; and Newell, 6. There were also two young adults 21 and 18 in the home that were children of F. T. Williams.
