Donald G. Walsh

Donald George Walsh, 94, of Park Rapids, MN died on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at the Diamond Willow Assisted Living Center in Park Rapids, MN.

Donald G. Walsh was born on June 23, 1925 to Charles and Ethel (Olson) Walsh on his grandparent's farm in Ottertail County, MN. He grew up in Savannah Twp., attending Shady Knoll Grade School and then graduating from Park Rapids High School in 1942 at the age of 16. He worked in the family logging and lumber business. He served in the Army during WWII (1945-1946) and again during the Korean conflict (1951-1952). After military service, he farmed on the Ponsford Prairie. In 1955, he married Patricia M. Tesch. They sold the farm in 1965 and purchased the Gambles Hardware Store in Oklee, MN. In 1972, he started a new career in sales and eventually worked for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). He was very proud of setting a sales record there and received the President's Award for sales of new memberships. He retired in 1993, after which he and his wife, Pat, enjoyed many winters in Casa Grande, Arizona. They returned to Park Rapids in April 2007. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, billiards, camping and political conversation. He served on the River Heights Board for several years. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and the American Legion.

Don was a devoted husband and loving father. All you had to do was shake his hand to understand how hard he worked. He was a good listener, loved to tell stories, and readily gave advice about everything from negotiating a deal to who to vote for in the next election.
Don loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, family camping trips, and golfing. He spent many years hunting elk in Colorado with his sons. One of his favorite stories was the time he went hunting in Colorado, shot a bull elk with a muzzleloader and then soon after he returned to Minnesota, he had triple bypass heart surgery. He continued hunting the Rocky Mountains through the age of 82.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia; his seven children – Cynthia (Jim) Keller of Scottsdale, AZ, Kim Walsh of Papillion, NE, Daniel (Cheryl) Walsh of Colorado Springs, CO, Julie (Dale Simmons) Walsh of Wabasha, MN, Wendy Walsh of Frankton, TN, David Walsh of Brainerd, MN, and Jeffrey (Shelly) Walsh of Cottage Grove, MN; 4 grandsons, 2 granddaughters; 2 sisters – Opal Myhres of Yakima, WA, and Diane (Roger) Dietsler of St. Paul, MN; 1 brother – Dean (Joyce) Walsh of Park Rapids, MN; sister-in-law – Sandra (Richard) Walsh of Park Rapids; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ethel, his brothers Vernon, Harold, and Richard, and his sister, Doris.

Lakeside Cemetery is also known as the BootLake Cemetery.
