Known to all as Artie, he was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, a cherished friend and a committed Christian.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Arthur and Louise Ralph Barnes, his in-laws W.W. and Virginia Price, and his grandson James Blake Hewitt.
Artie was born June 17, 1947 in Bethesda, MD. As the son of a Navy Corpsman, he traveled all over the world, even residing in Guam as a teenager. Artie graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA and following high school graduated from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) apprenticeship program as an Electronics Technician. He had a lengthy career at NNSY, enjoyed traveling extensively with the Tiger Team and retired in 2004 as an Electronics Test Director.
Artie was a Master Mason and a member of Portsmouth Lodge 100 AF & AM. He was also a long time member of Jolliff United Methodist Church.
Artie was an avid traveler; he loved to ski and loved the beach in equal measure. His best times were spent surrounded by a crowd of friends and family holding court and telling hilarious drawn out stories. He enjoyed playing cards, reading books, watching movies, listening to live music and was a fantastic dancer. Artie loved frogs, lighthouses and his many cats.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Linda. He is also survived by his 4 children, Charles Barnes of Portsmouth, Christie Kantowski (Ray) of Chesapeake, Ingrid Kitchen of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Amy Stout (Mike) of Chesapeake; 5 grandchildren, Charles Barnes, Kyle Hewitt, Trey Kitchen, Faith Kitchen and Grayson Stout; his sisters, Kathryn Doss (Bill) and Susan Freeman (Ernie) and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be held 1 pm Thursday, January 21, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Waverly Smith.
