The son of Ira W. Potts and Artie "Glenna" Lemmon, "Bob" and his mother moved to Bethalto, Madison County, Illinois in 1938 after his parents divorced. They then moved to nearby Wood River, Illinois around the time that Bob graduated from East Alton-Wood River Community High School as a member of the Class of 1950.

After high school, Bob began working at the Standard Oil Company refinery in Wood River. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in February of 1952.

He completed 8 weeks of basic training at Sheppard Air Force Base and then was transferred to Chanute Field. He was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base in South Carolina in October of 1954, and was selected to be 1 of 40 honor guards when President Dwight Eisenhower visited the Citadel in 1955. Bob received his discharge from the service in 1956 as an airman first class.

Bob married Marion V. Schultze on 31 Mar 1957 in Hernandes, Mississippi. At that time, she worked at Home Abstract and Title Company in Edwardsville, Illinois. They were the parents of 3 children.

Bob attended Shurtleff College, Lewis and Clark Community College and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He worked as a computer specialist with the Department of the Army, eventually becoming a team leader in the research and development division.

He served for many years on the East Alton-Wood River Board of Education beginning in 1981. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. The Potts were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wood River.

His wife, Marion, passed away in 2006.

Bob moved to St. Charles, Illinois during his later years. He died at the age of 88 years and 5 months.

He was survived by 1 son and 2 daughters-in-law; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Bob was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Sheila, who died in infancy; 1 son, Brian Potts; 1 grandson, Jacob Potts; an infant brother, Jimmie Lee Potts; and his mother and father.

Private graveside services and a celebration of life luncheon were held at a later date.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church.
