THE LATE REV. S. L. HARRIS.

The death is announced of the Rev. Samuel Link Harris, eldest son of the late Rev. William Harris, LL D. (resident tutor and Professor of Theology, Highbury Academy, Loudon), at the residence of Mr. H. Hunwick, Port road, Hindmarsh, at the age of eighty-seven years.
On October 12, 1887, Mr. Harris celebrated his golden wedding. The deceased gentleman, who came from an old Kentish family, was born at Cambridge, and in his youth studied under his father. In 1818 he went to a private school under the Rev. Mr Knight.' After three years had elapsed his father required him to choose between the legal and medical professions, and he selected the latter, for seven years he followed the avocation of an apothecary. He practiced in the suburbs of London until the death of his father, when be gave up medicine and entered the ministry.
His first charge was about eight miles from Ipswich, where he went in 1837, in which year he was ordained. In consequence of the loss of his voice Mr. Harris, on medical advice, determined to come to the Southern Hemisphere.
In 1851 he embarked for this colony in the ship Asia, and arrived in the same year.
In 1862 he took charge of the Hindmarsh Congregational Church, where he officiated for nine years. In 1866 he was elected Chairman of the Congregational Union, and in the same year been me the first Chairman of the united Societies of the Congregational Union and Home Mission. In 1872 he retired and took up the residence at Macclesfield. From that time he was practically "out of harness," except that he frequently acted in the capacity of a Justice of the Peace. Mr. Harris was widely known and highly esteemed, not only by the members of his own denomination, but by all with whom he came in contact. Six sons, three daughters, and thirty-nine grandchildren
survive. The funeral will take place at Macclesfield tomorrow.
