Wayne Hughes began his life on January 11, 1949 in Houston, Texas. He was born to Rev. George W. Hughes and Lillian M. Perry. He was the third child of seven children. He was married to Dianne M. Mitchell on November 11, 1967 and had two children, Artis and Tonya Hughes. As a father, he went out of his way to ensure he passed on teachings that would enable his children to be independent thinkers and be able to achieve anything they set out to do.

He attended Jack Yates High School and just prior to graduating from high school, he joined the United States Marines on April 25, 1966. He proudly served his country and fought bravely in the Vietnam War. He received honorable discharged from active duty on May 23, 1969.

He completed his GED while in the military and after leaving active duty, he attending Texas Southern University where he majored in Computer Engineering and Photography. This was where his love of computers was born and his natural abilities as a photographer were revealed. He remained inspired by technology until his illness and took great pride in his ability to program and build computers from scratch. His knowledge base was so broad that it seemed there was nothing he could not fix or do. As a husband and father, this served him well.

He seemed to move through life with ease and joy. He loved his family, friends, and never met a stranger. He and Dianne traveled extensively around the world where they developed a love for great food, music, and meeting new people. His personality was larger than life and he had a presence about him that attracted people from all walks of life who enjoyed his company. He had a great sense of humor, was full of wisdom, and shared his knowledge with anyone who asked.

He was often called the “great debater” because he had excellent communication skills and would often times engage family and friends in healthy debates and this was his way of connecting with people. When he was not debating the latest topics, he loved going to the movies on the weekends with family. This was a great past time for him. He could tell you anything about movies (new and old). He went to the movies so much that he was nicknamed “The Critic” by theater employees who were always happy to see him.

With his many accomplishments and joy of life-long learning, nothing meant more to him than his grandchildren. It was always a pleasure watching him with his first-born grandson’s Michael and Devonte because they brought him unconditional joy. He would talk about them often and was very proud of the young men they were becoming.

As he began to be more aware of his mortality, he would reflect back on his life and say, “I hope my family knows how much I loved them. I lived a good life and I’m blessed more than I realized. I made a few missteps along the way but I hope I was able to give back as much as I received.”

Wayne was a member of Lakewood Church and on November 29, 2014 he was water baptized and rededicated his life to Christ. On November 29th , he received God’s wonderful gifts of love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness. All of these gifts are given freely to all who seek God.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.
