Phyllis Staton Campbell, 83, of 11 Fayette St., died Wednesday morning, January 13th at the Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton, Virginia.

Born December 1, 1937 in Amherst County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Banner Pearl (Lawhorne) Staton.

She graduated as the class valedictorian from The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind and studied music at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA. She also studied creative writing at the Hadley Institute in Illinois, Creative Writing Institute in Indiana, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was a professional author since the 1960s and has sold two titles to the mainstream print market, one of which was published in the UK, China, and the USA. She also authored numerous articles for various periodicals. Phyllis was an accomplished musician and vocalist and served as organist at Faith Lutheran Church in Staunton for 20 years; prior to that was the organist at Bethlehem Lutheran in Waynesboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Clarence “Chuck” Campbell, as well as her parents, sisters Fay Staton Dawson (Stephen Y. “Bill”) and Inez Staton Wine (Billy), brother Oscar Lively Staton (Grace), and nephew Michael Peter Carney.

She is survived by her niece, Pamela Dawson Carney of Jackson, Tenn., and great-nieces Meghan Carney Kirk (Brad) of Selmer, Tenn., and Caitlin Mary Carney of Kernersville, N.C. Additional survivors include her cousin, Patricia Harlow Elder (Ken) of The Villages, Fla., great-great-niece Callie Michaelanne Kirk, and great-great-nephews Tyler Dawson Kirk and Barrett Archer Kirk of Selmer, Tenn.

She leaves dear friends including Marian Hackney, Kristin Winslow, Brian Vogel, Marjorie and Ian Arnott, Bob and Nancy Rinker, Virgil and Elaine Cook, Becky and Bob Roger, Juanita and Roger Miller, Richard Aylor, Darcus and Jeff Sprouse, The Rev. Rod and Prue Ronneberg, Pete & Shannon Mueller, her Faith Lutheran Family, and many more.

She will be interred privately in West Augusta Cemetery, joining her beloved husband, Chuck.
