Norma Jean (Baker) Webb, 91, of Adel, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2021, at Adel Acres Care Center. Norma was born on March 5, 1929, to Doyle Mathis and Laura Mae (Barchus) Baker, on a small farm near Knowlton, Iowa. She was the oldest of 5 children, later joined by Iona, Dick, Elmer and Joyce. Norma attended her first two years of school in Knowlton. When her family moved to a farm northeast of Mt. Ayr in 1936, she went to country school at Liberty Center through 8th grade. She and Iona would walk or ride a horse 2 miles to and from school. Norma had beautiful handwriting and won a handwriting contest as an 8th grader. She graduated from Mt. Ayr High School in 1947.
Growing up, Norma, being the oldest, was her father’s “right hand man” on the farm, doing chores, helping in the hay field, shucking corn, etc. She also enjoyed helping her mother in the home when possible.
On August 10, 1947, Norma was united in marriage to Gilbert Samuel (Bill) Webb, Jr. at her parents’ home in Mt. Ayr. They purchased a small farm south of Tingley. While living on the farm they were blessed with 7 children, Gary Leigh, Stephen Craig, Cynthia Ann, Michael David, Janelle Kaye, Gilbert Samuel III (Sam), and Rose Mary. Norma was proud to be able to be a stay-at-home mom when the children were young. She, and the children, assisted Bill wherever needed on the farm.
Norma had a strong faith and accepted Christ at an early age. She was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church and served as a Sunday School teacher and song leader for many years, at the various churches they attended, including the Adel Open Bible. Norma and Bill retired and moved to Tingley Retirement Apartments in 2007 and she cherished the friendships they made in the Sunday School class at the Ellston Methodist Church. Norma was also active at the Tingley Meal Site, delivering meals to shut-ins, and had fun joining the Kitchen Band and Friday Singers.
After moving to Zearing, Iowa, in 1967, and her youngest child started to school, Norma took a job driving a school bus. When they moved to Adel in 1969, she continued driving a bus. She had driven for a total of 23 years when she retired. She loved the children on her bus and had a good rapport with them and their families. She enforced the rules with love and respect and considered the students an extension of her family. Norma’s love for children was apparent as she did childcare in her home for a few years and also provided loving care to grandchildren and great-grandchildren when called upon. Many children have experienced snuggling with Grandma as she rocked and sang to them to sleep. She also worked at the Adel Floral Shop for 17 years, Harvey’s Greenhouse in Adel and the Adel Acres Care Center. Norma loved to read and embroidery but was happiest when surrounded by her family and loved attending as many of their activities as possible. Norma was a great cook and got lots of practice cooking for her large family. She loved having them all home for a meal. She could make the best chicken and homemade noodles with mashed potatoes. That seemed to be her specialty, and everyone’s favorite! People were disappointed if she didn’t bring them to any potluck she attended!
Norma was happy to call Adel Acres home since 2017. She loved the care and attention she received there and played a very competitive game of “BINGO”.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; son Sam; son-in-law Greg Aubert; brothers Dick Baker and Elmer Baker; brother-in-law Duane Triggs; and Bill’s siblings (4 sisters and 3 brothers).
