Lloyd W. Sutterfield was born in Freeport, Brazoria County, Texas, to William Riley Sutterfield (1878 Oklahoma/Arkansas–1968 Houston, Texas) and Clara Arizona Irwin (1880 Robertson County,Texas–1942 Houston, Texas). His father William was a well-regarded boat captain on the Texas coast. Lloyd's parents were raised in Oklahoma Indian Territory. They married in 1900, had several children, and then moved to the Texas coast. They lived in Palacios and Freeport, and eventually in Morgan's Point and Green's Bayou in Harris County. Lloyd's parents lost several infants who are buried in Palacios. Lloyd was their fourth surviving child, and one more child was born in Morgan's Point in 1919. Lloyd's parents divorced and both remarried. Lloyd's mother Clara married William T. Jones and they moved to Greens Bayou in Houston. Clara died in 1942 and was buried in Morgan's Point Cemetery under the name Clara Arizona Irwin Jones. Lloyd's father remarried Mamie Mae Worth (1880—1967) and lived in Greens Bayou, Precinct 2, Harris County until age 90. He was buried in Palacios, Texas.
Lloyd lived in Morgan's Point and finished 8th grade. He married his wife Merle Black in 1933 at age 18. They first lived in Houston, and Lloyd was a boat operator. By 1940, they lived in Greens Bayou, Harris County. Several Sutterfield families lived near him, and they were boatmen and boat builders. Lloyd's father and his second wife were neighbors. Lloyd died at age 82 in Liberty County, and was buried in Morgan's Point. Merle died in 2005 in Green's Bayou and is buried with Lloyd.
