Howard was born on his grandfather Taylor's homestead, which was located in Halifax Twp., but was raised by his grandmother Magdelena "Margaret" (Miller) Lyter. Howard was a witness to his father Albert's accidental death on a construction site when he was about 23 years of age. As a married adult Howard played the base horn, and together with his sons Albert and "Skit" participated in the local Halifax "musical band"; and occasionally the trio lended their musical talents as E.U.B. church Sunday school entertainment. Early on in married life Howard worked on bridge construction, often being out of town for long stretches of time. According to his son Albert, Howard even worked for a period in his life in Cuba, building bridges there. Later on he worked for his brother-in-law Harry Chubb in the building construction business in Halifax.
