US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. 1st Sgt Varden enlisted into the army, under the alias of Frank E Noyes, on November 7, 1861 at Augusta, ME. He served in Company A, 11th Maine Infantry Regiment. He was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, 5'10" with a light complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as machinist. Reenlisted into the regular army on December 15, 1866. He was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Ft Riley, KS. On June 1, 1872, was promoted to 1st Sergeant. Varden was with LTC George A Custer's battalion at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. After the battle his body was found near the commanding officer of Company I, Captain Myles Keogh. Varden was likely buried where he had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave in Last Stand Hill.
