Marilyn (Painter) Baker will be remembered for her friendly smile, for her willingness to serve and for sharing her talents with others. Her roots ran deep in Keya Paha County as both sets of grandparents, Bennett and Lucy Painter and James and Hannah Horton, were homesteaders in the early 1880s. Marilyn was also a true native of Springview. Except for the past three years and a year in school, she lived her whole life in Keya Paha County where she was born.

Marilyn Jane was born on August 31, 1927 to Roy and Jennie (Horton) Painter at Burton. She was the second daughter, joining Georgianna and later Beth and Lucy completed the family.

Marilyn attended rural schools and the family moved to Springview in 1944. Marilyn excelled in band and vocal music as a student at Keya Paha County High School, graduating with the Class of 1945. Following graduation and equipped with a Normal Training Teaching certificate, she taught rural schools in Brown and Keya Paha counties for four years.

Marilyn and Cecil D. Billings were married September 27, 1947 in Vermillion, SD. They obtained the contract to carry mail on the Norden route. Marilyn drove the route frequently while Cecil worked at other jobs. Three sons were born to this union: Ronnie Roy born in 1949, Mark Alan in 1952, David Dean in 1957.

On July 6, 1957, Cecil died of a sudden illness. Marilyn continued as a mail carrier until 1962 when she took on a new venture by enrolling at the School of Cosmetology in Casper, WY. In one year's time, she had completed her training as a beautician and returned to Springview. In November 1963, she opened “Marilyn's Kut n Kurl Salon” and performed this service to the community for over 50 years. She also continued to carry mail. One son remembered, “Mom would get home about noon from the mail route and she'd have the shop open soon after.” She retired after 44 years on the route.

On Sept. 26, 1964, Marilyn and Vance Baker were married at the Methodist Church in Springview. In 1967, Blaine Arden was born. Together they raised and educated the “four boys”, who brought much pleasure and joy.

Marilyn loved music and shared her talent by singing with “The Three Marilyns”, a trio made up of Marilyn Philben, soprano, Marilyn Nelson, second soprano and Marilyn Baker, alto. They sang at funerals, weddings and community and area events for over three decades.

Marilyn was community minded in her business as a member of the Service Club. She enjoyed days out with the “Red Hatters” and time with friends and family. As a member of the United Methodist Church, she was awarded her 75-year pin.

Marilyn passed away January 10, 2021 at Mable Rose Retirement Village in Papillion, Nebraska at the age of 93.

Preceding in death were her husbands, parents, son Ron Billings, sisters and husbands, Georgiana and Calvin Hallock and Beth and Wayne Hales.

Marilyn is survived by daughter-in-law Sandy Billings and son Coby and wife Kim; son Mark and Karen Billings and children, Brittany, Devin and wife, Jordan; son David and Donna Billings and children Tyson and fiance, Taylor, Beau and fiance, Josie; son Blaine Baker and children, Gabby, Carly and Jackson; nine great-grandchildren, Caden, Clay, Courtney, Kennedy, William, Danielle, Colton, Eleanore and Ezra Billings; sister Lucy Forgey (John); brother-in-law, Brad Baker, sisters-in-law, Wanda Graham, Wava Adcock, Dian Egelhoff (Fred), other relatives and many friends .
