November 7, 1932 – December 27, 2020
One of the many long-standing jokes of the Myers family was the beginning of our mother's obituary. "Jesus called; Peggy answered" was our family's jest toward our mother. Now it is time to sit down and write the final note on a life so well lived.
Margaret Shriver Myers, the daughter of the late Thomas and Dorothy Shriver, passed from this life on December 27, 2020, leaving a family who have all been well loved and have grown into fine citizens of this world.
Margaret, a long-time member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, lived a life devoted to her faith, her family, and the community.
An alumna of Harrisburg Catholic (Bishop McDevitt) High School, Margaret advanced her education at Harrisburg Area Community College and Penn State University, while raising six children. In her many years of teaching at Good Shepherd, OLBS and finally retiring from the Harrisburg school district, she touched the lives of thousands of children, who undoubtedly count her among their favorite teachers.
Margaret's commitment to the PA Association of the Blind, to teaching English as a second language, to tutoring adults wanting to further their education, and to sincerely supporting the families and individuals who ventured into her life, is her legacy. In addition to being an avid reader and student of life, her respites were Long Beach Island, the Appalachian Trail, lighthouses, the NY Times crossword puzzle and butter pecan ice cream.
Margaret was preceded in death by her grandson Nicholas Stanton Myers, her brother and his wife Thomas and Theresa Shriver.
She is survived by her family Michael Myers, his wife Lucy and their daughter Jessica, Carol Myers and her son Richard Shindler, Cathy Wetzel and her son Colin, Mark Myers and his husband Robert, Christine Myers and her son Joshua, his partner Emily and their son Owen, Matthew Myers, Diane Inghilterra and her son Louis, Mason Greenlee and his loving parents Celeste and Jake, siblings Elizabeth McGill, William Shriver and his wife Anne, Terrance Shriver, and Bonnie Lidle and her husband Mike.
The many friends and relations who Margaret included in this wonderful (and at times challenging) family are also remembered. Margaret's life was blessed with their warmth, support and love throughout the years.
Margaret, lovingly known as Gawee, impacted lives too numerous to count. A friend in need, a perfect stranger, or anyone needing to find solace from life's challenges were always welcome. She opened her heart, her home and her life to all who knew her. She was a teacher to all as she instilled a responsibility to be true to ourselves, to remain aware of the world around us, and to make a difference. She will be deeply missed.
Memorial mass will be held on Monday, January 4th at 11 A.M. at her church, 2121 N. 3rd St, Harrisburg, 17110 with Rev. Bernard Wamayose officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, walk by the beach and smell the salt air, hike the trail, attempt the crossword puzzle, or eat some butter pecan ice cream and think of our Gawee.
