Sandra G. Walker, a loving wife and dedicated mother, 74, of Lehighton, was born on May 27, 1946, in Scranton. She passed peacefully to her heavenly father on Jan. 8, 2021, in Lehighton.
Sandy was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Meyers) Schlappe.
Sandy was the second disabled person to graduate West Scranton High School in 1965. She attended International Correspondence School for shorthand writing and accounting from 1967-1968 and made it on the honor roll.
Her first job was at Good Will Industries and then later, Scranton Artificial Limb Co. where she was a secretary for 3½ years.
She married Marion Lee Walker Jr. in 1970 and together they purchased Diehl's Tree Farm from Marion's grandfather and renamed it Walker's Tree farm.
Sandra performed all administrative and payroll duties for the farm until 2018. She was married 50 wonderful years to husband Marion Lee Walker Jr.
Sandy enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting and painting ceramics. She was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer at Lehighton Wesleyan Church and later treasurer at Christ Evangelical Free Church in Mahoning Township. She also took on a role as treasurer of Mid-East Penn Christmas Tree Growers Association.
Since raising three children of her own was not enough of a challenge, she fostered children during the summer months and sponsored two high school exchange students throughout the years, one from Greece and another from Spain.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her brothers Robert Schlappe, and his wife Sharon, and Jack Schlappe; three children, David Walker, and his wife Patricia, Dianna Yeakel, and her husband Shawn, Debbie Gaumer, and her husband Christopher; 12 grandchildren Summer Goldy, Faith, Robert, and Laurel Ohl, and Luke Walker, Michael, Faith, Aleea, and Bree Yeakel, Kaylie, Nicholas and Alyssa Gaumer.
Services: The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Hospital for Children at donate.lovetotherescue.org or call 844-739-0849. Arrangements by Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, 200 Franklin St., Weissport. Interment Franklin Heights Memorial Cemetery, East Weissport.
