Helen Peterson, 84, of Charles City, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A private graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City. A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at a later date.

Helen Irene (Lewison) Peterson, the daughter of Lewis and Irene (Duea) Lewison, was born on March 13, 1936 in Estherville, Iowa. She graduated from New Hampton High School in 1954 and then received her teaching degree from Waldorf College in Forrest City in 1956. Helen was united in marriage to Robert Peterson on June 29, 1958 in New Hampton. To this union, two sons were born.

Helen was a teacher for elementary schools in Hubbard, Radcliff, Mapleton, and Charles City. She was very proficient in calligraphy and not only taught it in classes, but would professionally letter projects for people. She was a member of P.E.O., Colwell Culture Club, and St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was very active in the church choir for many years. She also volunteered around Charles City including the gift shop at the Floyd County Medical Center. Helen loved crafts, crochet, shopping, camping, decorating cakes, and spending winters down in Texas with Robert.

Living family members include her husband, Robert; son, Craig (Jana) Peterson; granddaughter, Autumn (Kevin) Bruning; and sisters-in-law, Verna and Alice Lewison.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Brad; and brothers, Ted and Paul.
