Robert Herbel, 76, Sylmar, Calif., died on Oct 28, 1998, in a convalescent home. Cremation was performed.
He was born Jan 27, 1922, in Lincolnville, Kan., to David and Mollie (Schwemmer) Herbel. He attended school in Kansas. As a young man, he moved to western Nebraska with the family. He lived in the area until World War II. On Sept 8, 1942 he was drafted into the armed forces. He served overseas in Australia, New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan. He received an honorable discharge on Nov. 30, 1945. He married Helen Schwartzkoph in Harrisburg, Neb., on July 12, 1947. To this union, four children were born, Robert Lee, Carol Sue, Tina Marie, and Nanette Faye.
He is survived by his son Robert; daughters Carol, Tina, and Nanette; brothers Melvin of Gering, Raymond of Ogallala and David of Wichita Falls, Texas; sisters Helen Mitchell of California, Irene Kreulzman of Kansas, Roberta Rein of Mitchell, and Esther Bastron of Scottsbluff; five grandchildren; many brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers Alex, Rudolph, Edwin, LuVerne and Reinhardt, sisters Mollie Deines, Emma Deines, Mary Herbel and Lydia Haas.
