John Adelbert Kitchens, 96, of Glastonbury, beloved husband for 36 years of Shirley (Oliver) Kitchens, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 1, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Batesville, AR on September 1, 1924, son of the late Ulysses S. and Ethel (Herron) Kitchens, he was raised in Arkansas and had lived in Hartford and Rocky Hill before moving to Glastonbury 36 years ago. John served in the US Army during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1943. John worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service and later served as a police officer for the Rocky Hill Police Department. Most recently, he worked in the automotive business as a car salesman and credit manager and during his retirement he worked part-time as a limousine and school bus driver. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino. Besides his wife, he leaves four children, Pamela Washington and her husband Paul of Falls Church, VA, Janice Miller and her husband Eugene of Springfield, MA, Juanita Savage of Bloomfield, and Kevin Kitchens and his wife Damaris Delgado of Springfield, MA; six grandchildren, Paul Washington, Jr. and his wife Teresa of Virginia Beach, VA, Terry “Eddie” Wine and his wife Kristy of Tolland, Michelle Savage of Hartford, Ronald Savage and his wife Sarah of Windsor, and Jordyn Kitchens and Londyn Kitchens both of Springfield, MA; 11 great-grandchildren, Joshua Washington, Ryan Washington, Gabrielle Washington, Kayla Wine, Mariah Wine, Jasmine Wine, Madison Wine, Darrion Matern, Toni Savage, Brianna Savage, and Ronny Savage; and host of niece, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Joseph Kitchens; two brothers, Chester and Eddie Kitchens; and five sisters, Loretta Hennings, Emma Jean Smith, Lorene Carodine, Geneva Brown, and Hannah Sennie. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, January 7, 1 p.m., at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown.
