Judith Lorraine Richards, “Judy,” age 76, of Columbus Ohio died peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday December 9, 2015 at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a long illness. Judy was born on November 20, 1939, in Old Town Maine, the daughter of the late Herbert Robertson and the late Ruth Madden Robertson. Judy was raised by her mother and beloved step-father the late Ernest Bois. Judy leaves her husband of 56 years Paul Bryant Richards, her daughter Cherylann Marie Richards and identical twin sons Stephen Joseph Richards and Stanley Bryant Richards. A third son Paul Bryant Richards, Jr predeceased her in 1969 after just a few hours of life. Judy leaves three brothers and their wives: Herbert “Red” and Jody Robertson, Harvey and Dolly Robertson, and Richard and Margie Robertson and six grandchildren: Bryant Tonkin Richards, Lisa Marie Richards, Lauren Amanda McWilliams, Holly Marie Walczak, Cordell Wayne Richards, and Mei-Lin Reneé Richards. She also leaves several great grandchildren, countless nieces and nephews, many friends, and her beloved cat Daisy Mae. Judy grew up in Maine and then moved to Massachusetts after her marriage where she raised her family. She and her husband spent many years of retirement in Florida where she was very active in her community and enjoyed line dancing. She particularly loved caring for the elder members of her community by visiting, bringing them meals, or taking them out for coffee, lunch, or ice cream. Judy moved to Columbus two years ago to be closer to her daughter. She joined North Church Congregational, UCC where she became a passionate fan of the Chancel Choir. Until very recently, Judy resided at Abbington of Arlington where she was known for her love of her cat Daisy, her laughter, and her coffee drinking. Judy worked at many jobs throughout her life, but the occupation that she loved the most and kept returning to was waitressing. Judy loved cooking and feeding people and was a master gardener. Her children’s friends always wanted to come to dinner at Mrs. Richards’ house. Her most sought after dishes were her famous lasagna and her baked beans. Judy’s yards were so full of plants and flowers people driving by would literally stop to get a closer look. Judy would often find a plant or two that needed thinning anyway and give the admirer something to take home with them. After her family was grown, Judy enjoyed the company of other children immensely. She was particularly fond of her Massachusetts’s neighbor’s sons Christopher and Matthew McKay-Turner. Judy’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Abbington of Arlington for their loving care of Judy during the last two years. Judy loved “her girls” and “her cook,” especially when he made her sandwiches for dinner or “snuck” her extra cookies. Judy’s family is also beyond grateful to Dr Lena Winkler, the Ohio Health Hospice team and the staff on seven yellow at Riverside Methodist Hospital for their compassion and their dedication to keeping Judy comfortable in the last days and hours of her life. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 3:00 pm at the North Church Congregational, UCC, 2040 West Henderson Road, Columbus. In memory of Judy, please consider making a gift to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements entrusted to Ohio Cremation & Memorial Society/Rodman-Snyder Memorial Center.
