Lois Peters Phillips, 89, a lifelong resident of the Hyde Park section of Scranton, passed away at home in the presence of her family Nov. 30. She was the wife of William Phillips, who preceded her in death Feb. 28, 1997. They had been wed for 45 years.
Born July 16, 1931 to Edward and Jessie Hill Peters, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and, prior to her marriage, had been employed in the office of the Glen Alden Coal Company.
Always active in the community, she had been a Girl Scout leader, PTA president, Meals on Wheels volunteer and a 40-year volunteer of the Blind Association’s Vision Screening Program for young children. She was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church, a member of the Scranton District Superintendency Committee of the United Methodist Church, and a board member of the United Methodist Homes. She had also been a member of the former Simpson United Methodist Church.
Ever feisty, she was an avid fan of Jeopardy and the New York Times, especially its crossword puzzles.
She is survived by four daughters: Deborah (Howard) Vogel, Traverse City, Mich.; Beth Phillips (John) Glacken, Upper Arlington, Ohio; Gwyneth Williams, South Abington Twp.; and Lisa Phillips, Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kate Manning (Jeff) Laabs, John J. (Amy) Manning III, and Adam Phillips Brovarone; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Michael, Emily and Daniel Laabs, and Jackson Manning. She is also survived by two sisters, Lucille Johnston and Ann Richardson of South Abington Twp., and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Jeanne Peters Shields of Carmel, N.Y., preceded her in death.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to Personal Home Health Care and Hospice (PHHC) and Dr. Darlene Dunay for their compassionate care and comfort.
Due to current restrictions, a private family service has taken place at Fairlawn Cemetery, Dalton. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
