Major McCreery operated a dry good business in St. Louis. During the Civil War, one of the buildings he owned (the McCreery Building) was confiscated by federal agents to be used as a hospital for Union soldiers & Confederate prisoners of war. McCreery served on General Sterling Price's staff as a quartermaster until he was captured in Arkansas & sent to a prisoner of war camp. After his release, he served on the staff of Confederate General Churchill.
