Clara Stanley was the daughter of a physician Almon Fleming Stanley and Angelina Sapp. who had also been appointed U S Postmaster 5/20/1865. Her husband's father Solomon was also a Postmaster (1850-55) in Danville, Ohio which was established by James Grant in 1824.

Clara cared for her parents for many years until her mother passed away despite her engagement to Francis Winfield Sapp. It made for a prolonged courtship for the pair and he was 33 when they were married. They had no children but were very involved with their extended families.
Francis was a doctor having graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, MD. He married Clara Louisa Stanley in 1887. He practiced for many years in Pennsylvania and Ohio. They settled in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of Solomon and Rebecca Sapp and my great grand uncle.

Her siblings were

1. George Washington Stanley was born 2/22/1843. He served as a Private with Company D, 4th Regiment, O.V.I. He enlisted on June 4, 1861 and was discharged due to disability on November 13, 1862, died later from his wounds.

2. William Eugene Stanley was born 12/28/1844 and married Emma Leonora Hills. In 1898, Stanley won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Kansas and upon winning the election, he was sworn in as 15th Governor of Kansas on January 9, 1899. Reelected to a second term, he left office on January 12, 1903. During his tenure, a US prison revolt at Fort Leavenworth and a 1901 convict strike were dealt with, a traveling library commission was authorized, and the state supreme court was increased to seven judges. After leaving office, he returned to Wichita and his law practice. From 1903 to 1904, he served on the Dawes Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes. They had four children.

3. Ermina Jane Stanley died young

4. John Rounceville Stanley was born 11-6-1849 and married Clara Nelson

5. Harriet Josephine Stanley was born 1-12-1851

Then Clara but no date

Almon Fleming Stanley was born April 1858 and married Josephine Pittinger

Her brother Governor William Eugene Stanley's son Harry W Stanley was the co-author of "The History of the Sapp Family" compiled with John Gooden Sapp and published in 1918. Clara's nephew.

Thank you to Debbie for creating the memorials of Clara's parents which allowed me to find her home. Much of the data about Clara's family comes from those memorials.
